Your day-to-day / Āu mahi ia te rā:
In this role, you’ll sit at the heart of Lotto NZ’s data ecosystem—turning complex data into trusted, high‑value insights that power smarter decisions across the business. Your days will be varied, hands‑on and collaborative, and may include:
- Designing, building and maintaining modern, cloud‑based data pipelines that reliably move data from source systems into our data platform
- Transforming raw data into well‑structured, analytics‑ready datasets that analysts, data scientists and business teams love to use
- Ensuring data quality, integrity and governance standards are embedded into everything you build
- Working closely with analysts, data scientists, IT and business stakeholders to understand needs and deliver fit‑for‑purpose data solutions
- Monitoring data loads, troubleshooting issues and resolving failures proactively to minimise business impact
- Exploring new data sources and continuously improving how we collect, store and use data across Lotto NZ
- Supporting analytics, reporting and machine learning initiatives with high‑quality, timely and well‑documented data
- Sharing insights, explaining data clearly, and helping lift data literacy across the organisation
- Keeping up with data engineering trends and bringing fresh ideas that add real value to the business
- Playing an active role in projects, ensuring data requirements are met from design through to delivery
You’ll combine strong technical skills with commercial thinking—always focused on how data can support Lotto NZ’s strategy, customers and contribution back to communities across Aotearoa.
Your team / Tō rōpū:
You’ll be part of Lotto NZ’s Data & Analytics team, a collaborative group of data engineers, analysts and data scientists who are passionate about using data to make a real difference. Together, the team builds and maintains the data foundations that support insight‑driven decision making across the organisation.
Sitting within Innovation & Product, the team partners closely with IT and business leaders to bridge the gap between complex source systems and clear, actionable data. From sales performance and customer behaviour to forecasting and machine learning, the work you do helps teams across Lotto NZ understand what’s happening, why it matters, and what to do next.
The team is focused on modernising and strengthening Lotto NZ’s data platform, improving data quality and governance, and making trusted data easier to access and use. You’ll be joining at a time where data capability is continuing to grow—supporting new initiatives, improving analytics maturity, and enabling smarter, faster decisions.
As a Data Engineer, your role is critical. You enable the rest of the team to do their best work by building reliable pipelines, well‑structured data assets and scalable solutions. Your work underpins analytics, reporting and advanced modelling, ensuring data is accurate, timely and fit for purpose.
Just as importantly, you’ll be part of a team that values curiosity, shared learning and impact—using data not just to support business strategy, but to help Lotto NZ deliver on its purpose of contributing back to communities across Aotearoa.
A bit about you / He kōrero mōu:
As an experienced Data Engineer, you’re passionate about what you do and proud of the quality of your work. You enjoy solving problems, working with others and building data solutions that actually get used. You’ll bring a mix of technical capability, curiosity and commercial thinking, along with:
Strong experience designing, building and maintaining data pipelines and data platforms in a cloud environment
- Confidence working with large, complex datasets and turning them into well‑structured, reliable data that others can easily use
- Solid knowledge of SQL and/or Python, and experience working with modern data tools and warehouses
- A good understanding of data quality, governance and why trusted data really matters to decision making
- The ability to connect technical work to real business needs—understanding what people are trying to achieve and how data can support that
- Experience working closely with analysts, data scientists and non‑technical stakeholders, and explaining data clearly and simply
- A proactive, curious mindset—you look for better ways to do things and enjoy learning new approaches and tools
- Strong attention to detail, balanced with the ability to prioritise and keep things moving
- Confidence presenting insights or recommendations and contributing ideas at all levels of the organisation
